June 2nd & 3rd 2017
Our classic “Big Boat” Dragon Boat festival is open to everyone, from corporate to community teams, or ones made up of family and friends. Action starts at the Manitoba Canoe & Kayak Center, 6:00 pm on the Friday with 200m races and again at 9:00 am on the Saturday morning for 500m, finishing around 6:00 pm.
The River City Dragon Boat Festival was started in 1996 and has grown to a 50+ team event every year! Come out and participate or even just to see what the festival us all about.
Mini French Festival
As well as our the Manitoba School Dragon Boat Challenge this year the Manitoba Paddling Association will be offering a new type of mini dragon boat festival for French and French immersion schools in and around Winnipeg. The Festival will take place Friday June 2nd 2017 from 10am until 2pm and be for students in grades 6 through 8 who have a majority if not all of their classes in French. Our goal is to build a bigger French community in the area as well as promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
This Festival will be entirely in French, from the coaching to the announcing and of course the music! It will be an extension of our Manitoba High School Dragon Boat Challenge (Sunday June 4th). Instead of coming to the Manitoba Canoe Kayak Center (MCKC) for practices (whether that was during the day or after school) teams will arrive in the morning at the Manitoba Canoe & Kayak Center for their practices and after lunch will put what they’ve just learned to the test in races against the other schools.
As a not-for-profit, Provincial Sport Organization, we take our Mission, Vision and Values to heart! We work hard to develop the skills of athletes at all levels. We are unmatched by anyone or any organization in Manitoba to promote paddling as a way to enhance the lives of those who participate.
Yes, MPA makes safety our number one priority. We have an excellent reputation and superior safety record - second to none. We want to ensure that individuals, as well as teams complete their races in the safest manner possible. That can only be possible because of the training, knowledge and experience as well as the focus and dedication of our staff and volunteers!
All teams entering our Dragon Boat events are coached by experienced paddlers who have competed nationally as well as internationally. We pride ourselves in the fact that our coaches know what it takes to work with the teams to reach their potential.
The MPA partners with the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division (CCS) to raise funds. The funds raised for the Canadian Cancer Society Dragon Boat Festivals in Manitoba support cutting edge cancer research to advance treatments, increase early diagnosis, clinical trials and hopefully develop a cure. The Society also provides community based programs and services such as our transportation service that support thousands of Manitoba cancer patients and their families. The Canadian Cancer Society is also a voice of change ensuring that governments at the local, provincial and national remain responsive to the evolving needs of cancer patients. For example, in 2011 the CCS convinced the Manitoba government to cover the cost of all cancer treatment and support drugs. Since then, this initiative has helped more than 12,000 families in Manitoba save an estimated $54 million in drug expenses. Thanks to the commitment of time and energy of our volunteers, we are able to keep our administrative costs below 7%.
